Junior football: Jake hits last-gasp cup final clincher

(Under 12 Hunts County Cup final) St Neots Town Youth 1, Woodston Blue 2

(Under 12 Hunts County Cup final) St Neots Town Youth 1, Woodston Blue 2WOODSTON Blue have written the latest chapter in what could become one of the most impressive legacies in local junior football.

After lifting the Junior Alliance Division One title and the League Cup last month, Terry Avent's young stars added the Hunts Cup to their collection yesterday with a dramatic last-gasp win against St Neots at Leading Drove.

Jake Farrell's 62nd goal of the season with just 17 seconds to go saw the city side complete a trophy treble to spark wild celebrations in the Woodston camp.

And with Avent confident of keeping his talented side together for many years to come, Woodston winning the big prizes is likely to become a familiar sight in years to come.

He said: "What a performance! St Neots really made it hard for us. They clearly came to close us down and make it hard which they did superbly.

"Playing on the big pitch at Yaxley presented both teams with a new challenge but we coped well and, although we had to wait for the winner, I think we deserved the result.

"This was the big one for us as it means we have now won all the trophies we went for, which is a terrific achievement, but we cannot stand still.

"The team will only get stronger as they grow and that is a frightening prospect. The hunger is there to go on and create a real legacy of success at this club and I know I have the players here to do it.

"Last season we won the league and cup double, this time we have done the treble and we want to keep that going next season."

This was no re-run of Woodston's one-sided League Cup final win however and when St Neots took the lead after a slick passing move on 15 minutes, it was clearly going to be a tough day at the office.

But as the half progressed, Woodston's midfield trio of skipper Reece Walker, Joe Searson and Josh Watson began to exert more influence.

And it was Watson who set up the all-important equaliser. Continues on next pageAfter another surge down the wing, the midfielder fed Farrell in the middle and the rocket-heeled striker did the rest, beating the last man with ease before slotting the ball into the bottom corner for his first of the match.

But St Neots were still carrying plenty of threat and had it not been for a superb save from Mitchell Leggett 10 minutes after the break it would have been back to square one.

Having survived the scare, however, Woodston pushed for the winner with Watson hitting the bar with 15 minutes to go.

And as time looked to be running out, Walker and Watson combined once more to put Farrell in and Woodston's top scorer made no mistake from 10 yards to win the match.

Woodston squad: Mitchell Leggett, Callum Avent, Sam Avent, Jaiden Furnell, Jamie Jordan, Fahan Adil, Harley Williamson, Danny Rowe, Josh Watson, Joe Searson, Jake Farrell, Jake Gittings, Jordan Temple, Reece Walker.

ELSEWHERE at the weekend, Peterborough League Honda Combination Division One champions Whittlesey Reserves were held 3-3 by second-from-bottom Leverington Reserves in their final game.

Ashley Anthony, Robert Dart and Stefan Green were on target for the champions while James Woods (2) and Simon Oakley scored for Leverington.

IN the final Peterborough Sunday Afternoon League game of the season, Division One runners-up Fletton United beat Real Whittlesey 2-0 with goals by Dunning and McDonough.
