THE Spalding six-a-side tournament certainly proved a happy hunting ground for local teams who scooped top honours in two different age groups at the weekend.Stanground Wasps overcame Netherton in a penalty shootout to lift the under 9s trophy while Whittlesey Blues walked away with the under 10 title to secure their first ever piece of junior football silverware.

Stephen Marshall's young Whittlesey warriors played superbly throughout the event before overcoming Leverington 1-0 in a hard-fought final.

He said: "All the players did superbly and we are delighted with the win which should give the lads a lot of confidence ahead of next season.

"We played some lovely pass and move football against some very tough teams and are obviously delighted with our first ever trophy."

In the Under 9 age bracket Wasps were left needing penalties to take the honours after a late solo effort from Robert Miller forced their final against Netherton into extra time.

The additional period ended goalless but Miller, Josh Atkinson, Steven Smith and Liam Ward were all on target from the spot to secure the trophy after goalkeeper Trent Stanley had produced two stunning saves to set up the win.

Manager Dave Atkinson said: "We played high quality football at pace throughout the tournament and deserved to get into the final.

"This proved to be a very tight affair and we had to chase the game after Netherton took the lead, but Miller nicked one late on to set us up for penalties.

"I would like to say a big well done to all the boys for a great effort which produced some wonderful football on the day."
