Junior Football: Timms scores a pearler to earn Coates sixes win

COATES Under 11s put their indifferent form behind them to emerge victorious from the Hungate Junior Six-a-side tournament.

COATES Under 11s put their indifferent form behind them to emerge victorious from the Hungate Junior Six-a-side tournament.Declan Williamson's side spent last season struggling in the middle reaches of the Junior Alliance second division but they blew away the cobwebs in style to win their age group on Saturday.

After comfortably topping their group to qualify for the semi-finals, Coates came up against a decent Downham Market side with a place in the final up for grabs.

A tight scrap produced few chances and no goals with the winners decided from the penalty spot where it was Coates keeper Joshua Williamson who emerged the hero after pulling off the decisive save to put his team through.

There was a goal in the final however - and what a goal it was.

Up against Reffley, the game appeared to be heading for another stalemate before Joseph Timms chested down a pass on the edge of the area and lashed home an unstoppable drive which proved to be the winner.

Williamson said: "We under-achieved a bit in Division Two last season so it was great for the boys to show everyone what they can do when it all comes together.

"There were some very good sides in this competition so to win our age group was a wonderful effort and I have to say Joseph's goal was a worthy winner.

"Hopefully it will give them all a lift to mount a serious promotion challenge next season."
