Jones heads Lord Burghley to victory
LORD BURGHLEY 1 NETHERTON 0 (PFA Sunday Morning Senior Cup final)
LORD BURGHLEY 1 NETHERTON 0 (PFA Sunday Morning Senior Cup final)LORD BURGHLEY created their own piece of Peterborough Sunday Morning League history by winning the Senior Cup at Chestnut Avenue yesterday.
A first-half headed goal from man- of-the-match Richard Jones sealed a 1-0 win for the Premier Division leaders and ensured the Stamford side became the first team ever to win both junior and senior versions of the PFA Cup.
After taking an early lead via Jones' powerful header from a corner, Shaun Greetham's side dominated the first half and while Netherton came back strongly after the break Burghley held firm to lift the cup.
But with one pot already safely stowed away in the Burghley trophy cabinet, player/manager Greetham warned his players that there is still plenty of football to be played this season.
"After taking an early lead I thought we played really well in the first half and could even have gone in 2-0 up at the break" said Greetham.
"They came at us in the second half but we defended well and I do not think they really created that much - I know I didn't have to do that much in goal as the lads did well to restrict them to half-chances.
"Overall I think we deserved the win and we are obviously delighted to have become the first team to win both the senior and junior versions of the PFA Cup.
"But we still have a chance in the league and we play Netherton again in the Hereward Cup so we cannot fall into the trap of thinking the season is over because we have got our hands on a trophy. It’s already been a great season but it could get even better.”
After taking the lead early, Greetham’s side then took control of the first half with Richard Thompson and Simon Cranwell in good form as Burghley used their width to cause Netherton problems down the flanks.
The city side did have a good penalty shout turned down when Jon Harrison was felled in the area by Robbie Blowers 30 minutes in but referee Paul Clarke judged contact had been made with the ball and waved play on.
After being shut out in the first half having looked below their best, Netherton did however come out firing for the second.
Adam Scotcher, Harrison and Mark Kingston really started to come into the game, but despite their efforts, Netherton’s repeated attacks all floundered against a Burghley defence superbly marshalled by stoppers-in-chief Jones and Robbie Blowers.
Netherton manager Roland Dean said: “I thought we played well and were unlucky not to score but fair play to Burghley, they are a decent side and got the breaks.
“But we have a chance for revenge when we take them on in the Hereward Cup and I can guarantee my players will be well up for that one.
