'It could have been 4-0' claims Scunthorpe manager Adkins

SCUNTHORPE chief Nigel Adkins breathed a huge sigh of relief after his side claimed the scalp of Posh on Saturday. The Iron had been beaten in both previous League One outings either side of a Carling Cup drubbing at Hartlepool, but they finally opened their account by seeing off Darren Ferguson's men by a solitary goal.

Adkins hailed his side for surviving a torrent of Posh pressure in the second period, but insisted their winning margin should have been greater.

Adkins said: "It is pleasing to get off the mark. The players trained hard all week and responded in a great manner after our disappointing start.

"I felt we showed a great resilience to make sure we won the game – and if you look at the great opportunities we had late on it could have been 4-0.

"I believe we have assembled a really good, strong squad to mount a challenge this season and now that we have got off and running, we are looking forward to making that happen."
