In pictures: Posh are back in training

POSH footballers sizzled in the sun yesterday as they reported back for pre-season training on one of the hottest days of 2009.

POSH footballers sizzled in the sun yesterday as they reported back for pre-season training on one of the hottest days of 2009."We won't kill them on the first day," promised manager Darren Ferguson beforehand. "It will be a gentle work-out to start with."

Gentleness came in the form of circuits in the gym at 10.30am followed immediately by laps of the Embankment athletics track. Surprisingly striker Shaun Batt, a schoolboy triple jump champion, was physically ill after the running, but he recovered in time to take part in a short, sharp session of jogs, sprints, shuttles and stretches after lunch before the balls came out for half an hour to end the day.

Ferguson took part in pre-season training for the 21st year of his career, but he didn't look quite as sharp and fresh as newcomers Toumani Diagouraga and Tommy Rowe.

The manager allowed centre-back Chris Westwood and winger Sergio Torres to join in with the first-team squad despite their availability for transfer.

The other transfer-listed lads formed a separate group under the control of reserve and youth team boss David Oldfield.

Posh skipper Russell Martin said: "That was a tough session in the heat, but the lads are still bubbling after last season's success so they took it in their stride.

"Pre-season is always hard work, but at least the conditions are good preparation for our trip to Marbella next week."

The Posh squad and management team fly out to Spain in the early hours of next Monday. They have a private practice match arranged against League Two side Rochdale next Wednesday before flying back on the Saturday.

"We're doing the same as we have in the last two pre-seasons," Ferguson added. "It worked well then so there is no point in changing anything."
