With an important English Premier League outing against Swindon on Sunday, a mish mash of walking wounded and fresh-faced kids took to the ice against the league leaders.
And despite being boosted by the return of hulking defenceman Doug McIver, Phantoms had neither the resources nor the desire to secure themselves a result.
Irwin said: "I make no secret of the fact that I am glad to see the back of this competition."
"We have a massive game against Swindon at the Peterborough Arena on Sunday (face-offf 5.30pm) and that is all I am bothered about."
"The injuries we have meant I could really have done without this but we stuck the kids in there and Damien King in goal and I think they did well and will have benefited from it.
"But from my point of view I have rarely seen such a poor game. There was no intensity from either side and while we had chances, I cannot say I am too disappointed about losing."
Due to the lack of available bodies, the likes of Connor Stokes, Connor Pollard and Nathan Pollard all received call-ups from the youth ranks for what amounted to little more than an unwanted diversion.
And while the youngsters performed well enough, by the end of the second period Lightning were two goals to the good despite their own less than commited approach."
Ross Bowers' strike with 15 minutes to go sealed the Phantoms fate and wrapped up an not entirely unwelcome defeat.
