English Premier League: MARIS Ziedins hit a hat-trick as Phantoms snatched a precious away win in Telford on Sunday night.

In a topsy-turvy game against the Tigers, Ziedins led the way while there were also goals for Tom Carlon (2), Richard Bentham, Joe Graham and Ondrej Lauko as Phantoms bagged their first road win in seven games.

But after watching his side very nearly throw the points away when they were pegged back to 6-6 in the third period, coach Chris Allen was a relieved man after the game.

He said: “We controlled a lot of the game but we had a bit of a wobbly period in the third period and we let them right back in it. Thankfully we got a couple more goals and got the win but we need to keep working on cutting those kind of lapses out of our game.

“The same thing happened in Sheffield on Saturday night but we got away with it against Telford. But the main thing was we got the points.

“It was not pretty but we got the job done and we have kept ourselves in the hunt for the play-offs.

“We are only two points off eighth place and with 16 games left we are feeling good about forcing our way into the picture.”

Phantoms got their night off to the perfect start when Ziedins opened the scoring by converting Robbie Brown’s pass with just under three minutes on the clock.

Three minutes later Bentham doubled the lead before the Tigers fought back to tie things up through Marek Hornak and Scott McKenzie. But another Ziedins goal meant it was Phantoms who held a 3-2 lead at the first buzzer.

And early in the middle act Ziedins had his hat-trick before two goals from Carlon seemed to have put Phantoms in control with a commanding 6-2 lead.

Joe Henry cut the arrears before the end of the period, however, before the home side surged back into the reckoning with Juraj Senko, Thomas Soar and Luke Brittle making it 6-6 with 10 minutes of the game left.

Phantoms were wobbling but a time-out gave Allen the chance to rally his troops and they came out all guns blazing with Graham and Lauko firing the goals to secure the win.
