Preview: Phantoms ready for rough stuff

Peterborough Phantoms will be hoping to find a cure for their travel sickness when they hit the road this weekend.

While Chris Allen’s side have won three on the bounce at the Peterborough Arena, there have been serious struggles away from their Bretton base.

Since beating Basingstoke Bison on Boxing Day, Phantoms have drawn a blank in their last five away games, putting the push for an English Premier League Play-off spot in serious jeopardy.

And things are not going to get any easier this weekend when Allen leads his side up to Sheffield.

Having been left fuming after his team were knocked about at the Peterborough Arena earlier this month, Steeldogs’ player/coach Andre Payette has promised a warm welcome at IceSheffield on Saturday (face-off 7.30pm).

But Phantoms skipper Jeff Glowa is confident his team are tough enough not to buckle under pressure in the Steel City.

He said: “Their gameplan is to intimidate teams, that’s what they do and we have to be ready for it. The Steeldogs can afford to play that way and take men to the penalty box as they are playing four lines and can lose men. We can’t. So we just have to play our game and stick to the plan, but there is no way we will be getting pysched out by Payette’s threats.

“We are all aware that our away form needs to improve. We have sorted it out at home but we need to start picking up some road points if we want to make the Play-offs.”

Of their two road games this weekend, on paper Phantoms probably have a more realistic chance of taking a win in Telford on Sunday.

The city side have won on two previous trips to Shropshire but Glowa has warned his team not to take anything for granted.

“We have a good record there but if you look at Tigers’ results over the last few weeks it’s clear that when their game is on they can beat anyone,” he added.

“I don’t think anyone expected them to beat Guildford Flames last Sunday and they have beaten Sheffield at their place too recently so we will have to be at our best to come away with anything.

“If we go there thinking it is going to be easy then we will lose, it’s as simple as that. There are no easy games in this league especially when you are away from home but if we can find a big effort this weekend there’s no reason to think we can’t put more points on the board.”
