Peterborough Phantoms player coach Slava Koulikov praised his players for setting the record straight last night (January 17).
The city team beat Solway Sharks 4-2 in their penultimate English Challenge Cup game at the Dumfries Ice Bowl in Scotland.
Phantoms had become the first English Premier League team to slip up against English National League opposition in the North Group when bitten by the Sharks at Planet Ice last weekend.
But they ensured there was no repeat north of the border despite briefly trailing as the teams exchanged goals inside the opening minute.
Marc Fowley had Solway ahead after just 20 seconds but a first senior goal from local teenager James White ensured Phantoms were level just 22 seconds later.
White was one of five members of the Peterborough Islanders side to feature for Phantoms and impress Koulikov.
But no further goals were scored until after the mid-point of the match. A powerplay effort from Koulikov and a Cameron McGiffin strike put Phantoms in the driving seat but Solway refused to roll over as they halved their arrears on a numerical advantage of their own just four seconds before the buzzer.
Some smart stops from netminder Dan Lane kept Phantoms ahead before Edgars Bebris, who had earlier contributed three assists, bagged a late clincher with two-and-a-half minutes remaining.
Koulikov admitted: “It was very nice to see the guys take responsibility after the disappointing result in our rink last weekend and put it right last night.
“We had a young team out on the ice and the guys who have stepped up from Islanders did very well.
“It was almost like playing at home as plenty of our fans travelled up and were very loud.
“They created a good atmosphere and we were able to give them a good result.”
Phantoms complete their North Group programme with a visit to Blackburn Hawks tonight (January 19, 5.45pm).
