Ice hockey in Peterborough goes back as far as 1981

The sport of ice hockey in Peterborough can be traced back as far 1981 to the opening of the ice rink in Bretton.

The city's first team - Peterborough Pirates - roared into battle in the National League the following year.

The club's halcyon days arrived in the early 1990s when, in successive years, they reached successive Heineken League Championship weekends at Wembley Arena.

The Pirates struggled to survive at the sport's highest level due to the emergence of many new arena-based teams and finally folded in April 2002.

But out of the ashes of that team rose the current Peterborough Phantoms who, boasting many of the players who had been with Pirates at the bitter end, exploded onto the English Premier League scene in stunning style with a debut-season honours double in 2002/03.

Phantoms retained the EPL Cup the following season and then won the KO Cup in 2007/08 - a success which whet the appetite for their greatest-ever season.

Under the guidance of coach Colin Patterson, Phantoms completed a league, cup and play-offs treble during a never-to-be-forgotten 2008/09 campaign.

Phantoms also boast a thriving junior set-up with teams from under-10 to under-18 all aiming to feed talent into the senior ranks.
