Kynaston drafted in as bench coach

PHANTOMS player/coach Chris Allen has drafted in some extra help as the club bids to reach the EPL Play-offs.

The club’s director of hockey Jon Kynaston has been drafted in as bench coach to help Allen manage his players for the next few home games at the Peterborough Arena.

Kynaston, who is Phantoms under 18 coach and also England’s head technical coach, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table.

He said: “It is a role I have played with the senior team before and it was something we did on Sunday night against the Steeldogs. I took the team briefing before the game and ran the bench and it worked well.

“With Chris playing, it helps everyone know exactly what is going on and what’s required at different times in the game and it also means Chris can just worry about playing the game.

“Of course he still chips in but I think sometimes it helps him to get a bit of coaching out there himself and also to have an extra pair of eyes and ears during games.

“Time is an issue for me as I am very busy but hopefully I can continue with it for the next few home games.”

And Kynaston is well aware just how important those home games are to Phantoms as they chase a play-off spot.

He added: “We need to turn our building into a bit of a fortress and make it so other teams really hate coming to play here.

“When the crowd gets behind us and when the team plays like they did against Sheffield then we have a chance to get a lot of points from our home games and we are going to need them.”

n PETERBOROUGH Islanders went from the sublime to the ridiculous as they endured a topsy-turvy weekend on the road in the English National League.

Goals from Ross Horsley (2), Jon Brammall (2), Dale Jowett and James Pentecost secured a 6-5 win in Bristol on Saturday night but the wheels came off in a big way against Gosport and Solent the following night.

Facing their Division Two South title rivals, the Islanders slumped to their biggest defeat of the season as they were blown apart 12-1 by the red-hot Devils.

n PHANTOMS Under 10s are in action this weekend at the Peterborough Arena when they take on Guildford on Saturday (face-off 4.25pm). Entry is free.
