Ice hockey preview: Phantoms told to use their brains

Peterborough Phantoms will need brains as well as brawn against Telford Tigers tonight (21 January) according to skipper Jeff Glowa.
The city side ended a run of seven games without a win by employing strong-arm tactics to beat Sheffield Steeldogs at the Peterborough Arena last Sunday.
And while Phantoms intend to maintain that physical approach against the Tigers, Glowa knows his side will have to think as hard as they fight to get the points.
He said: “It was great to get back in the win column against Sheffield. We fought hard for those points and the whole team contributed to the win which was really important and we need to keep that up against Telford.
“We need to work hard and get into them from the start, but it’s not just about playing hard. We need to play smart too, brawn as well as brain.
“We need to play hard like we did against Sheffield but we want to make sure that our effort is not wasted.
“We did that against Basingstoke recently when we should have been four or five-nil up but instead let them hang around before they took it away from us in the final period. We need to be switched onto that to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
Glowa also believes Phantoms need to be more ruthless in front of goal if they hope to reach the English Premier League play-offs.
Despite having some of the most highly-regarded forwards in the league, the city side have scored the second lowest amount of goals.
So Glowa wants Phantoms to show some teeth against the Tigers. “We have been creating lots of chances but we have not been taking them and that has cost us so far,” he added.
“We need to be a lot more ruthless in front of goal so that we can start burying teams.
“We have three lines now and we certainly have the forward players to hurt any team in the league and we need to start doing that.
“Tonight I want us to see us go out there and get up early against a Telford side that has certainly improved over the last month or so. If we let them, they can hurt us so we need to make our home advantage count.
“Having our fans behind us, cheering us on and creating a good atmosphere is a huge factor for us.
“It is like having an extra man out on the ice and with their support I am confident we will win and win well tonight.”
