PETERBOROUGH Islanders boss Ross Mackintosh is refusing to write off his side’s title hopes despite their shock defeat to Romford Fury.

The ‘Isles’ welcomed Fury to the Peterborough Arena on Saturday knowing a win would keep them hot on the heels of English National League Division Two South leaders Gosport and Solent Devils.

But despite goals from Ross Horsley, Stuart Dane and Craig Lazenby, the city’s title bid took a serious knock as they went down 4-3 on home ice. The defeat means the Islanders are now four points behind the Devils having played three games more.

Mackintosh, however, remains bullish about his side’s chances although he conceded they are now second favourites to land the crown.

“I am not disappointed with the way we played against Romford, just the result,” he said. “We went a couple of goals down early against them and spent the rest of the game playing catch-up which is always hard.

“It is a blow but we are not out of the title race yet. We need other teams to do us a favour by beating the Devils but we still have a good chance and will not be ruling ourselves out just yet that is for sure.”

The Islanders could still earn promotion back to English National League Division One without topping their league, however. Due to the demise of ENL 1 side, the Oxford Stars, two teams could yet be promoted this season meaning if they can hold onto second spot, Mackintosh’s men would make the step up.

Revenge will be high on the agenda next Saturday (February 18) when the Islanders travel to Essex for the return leg against Romford Fury (face-off 5.15pm).
