CITY ice hockey star Lewis Hook failed to hide his frustration after he narrowly missed out on a place in the individual skills challenge final at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck.

Without a national ice hockey team out in Austria, Team GB’s hopes lie solely in the individual event that tests the skater’s fastest lap, shooting accuracy, skating agility, shot speed, passing precision and puck control.

But the 15 year-old Hook, who was seeded ninth after qualifying for the games in Finland at the back end of last year, failed to produce his best form when he needed it and ended up 12th on the day.

And with only the top eight advancing to tomorrow’s final that signalled the end of Hook’s Youth Olympics, a fact that the Jack Hunt School pupil found hard to take.

“I’m devastated to have gone out but it’s a really big competition and I’m pleased with my performance overall,” he said.

“I hoped to finish slightly better than 12th but it’s always going to be tough when you are going up against the best in the world for your age.

“It was a really hard competition. I did well in the skating but a couple of the drills – passing and shooting in particular – let me down.

“The rest of the Games has been really good and I’m really pleased for Katherine Gale (GB’s female ice hockey representative who made the finals).

“To come second like she did is really impressive.

“These games are a once in a lifetime experience so that’s not it for me. I’m definitely going to support my team-mates and Katherine especially and make the most of this opportunity.”
