I'll fight for Posh future, says Torres

TRANSFER-LISTED winger Sergio Torres has vowed to fight for his Posh future.

TRANSFER-LISTED winger Sergio Torres has vowed to fight for his Posh future. The 25 year-old started just 12 matches in his first season at London Road following a 150,000 move from Wycombe Wanderers last summer.

He scored just one goal and his form forced Posh manager Darren Ferguson to reluctantly make Torres available for transfer after a second successive promotion was secured.

So far Posh have not received a single offer for Torres and the Argentinian has pledged to knuckle down to try and persuade Ferguson into a change of mind. He did train with the first-team squad yesterday, unlike the majority of the other transfer-listed players still at the club.

Torres said: "Any player would be disappointed to be placed on the transfer list, but I am a professional and I will try hard to make the manager change his mind while I am still at the club.

"It encourages me that I was allowed to train with the first-team. The most important thing for me right now is to have a good pre-season because last year I missed most of it because of injury and that didn't help me settle in at the club.

"I don't want to leave this club and I want to play in the Championship. Many people have told me that the Championship might suit my game as I will get more time on the ball.

"I hope I can prove to the manager that I am worth a try. I will do my best to make that happen."

Transfer-listed Posh winger Alfie Potter is expected to tie up a season-long loan deal with Blue Square Premier League side Oxford United by the end of the week, while striker Rene Howe has been the subject of inquiries from Yeovil, Torquay and Notts County. Howe also spoke with Lincoln City last weekend.

Central defender Chris Westwood is close to agreeing a two-year contract with Blue Square Premier League favourites Luton Town.

Posh made a second bid for Stockport's 17 year-old central defender Josh Thompson yesterday. Ferguson is keen to sign the youngster in time to take him on the training trip to Marbella on Monday, but director of football Barry Fry reported that dealing with the administrators at cash-strapped County is 'hard work'.

Although Torres trained with the first team squad yesterday, he has yet to be given a squad number for the 2009/10 campaign.

Newcomers Tommy Rowe and Toumani Diagouraga have been handed numbers 14 and 15 respectively.
