Hunts FA Primary Football finals

Peterborough sides enjoyed a successful time at the inaugural Hunts FA Primary Football finals last week.In total 200 players descended on Sawtry Football Club on Wednesday for the six-a-side event which saw William Law, William de Yaxley and Fulbridge flying the flag for Peterborough.

All three teams had to battle their way through two qualifying tournaments to make it to Greenfields but they made sure all that effort had not been wasted.

In the boys round robin tournament William de Yaxley, William Law, St Mary's and Upwood all played one another but the final proved to be an all-Peterborough affair.

And after a close scrap between William Law and William de Yaxley, it was the Yaxley team which came out on top after a nerve-jangling sudden-death penalty shoot-out.

In the girls section there was more joy for the local sides when Fulbridge strolled to a convincing 4-0 final win against Hartford.

All teams who took part in the finals were given certificates by Hunts FA who organised the event with the help of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Competition Management team.

Event co-ordinator Ryan Armes said: "It was great to be able to bring together the best teams from the area, in what proved to be a very exciting and entertaining event.

"The standard of play was very high in each of the tournaments and it was especially pleasing to see players take part that would not normally get the chance.

"Special thanks must be given to Sawtry FC for providing the facilities and all of the referees for giving up their time. Also to Hunts FA for supporting the schools programme and sponsoring the event."
