SHOOTING stars could be seen at Sir Harry Smith School. The Whittlesey venue played host to the Fenland Tournament with 92 competitors from across the county and beyond doing battle in the Longbow, Recurve and Compound disciplines.

The event was organised by Jill and Paul Anthony for Fenland Archery Club - and there was plenty for the host club to cheer.

Roz Pain (ladies recurve), John Pain (mens compound), David Pearce (mens recurve) and Paul Atwood (longbow) helped Fenland to win the Combined Team event, while there were notable individual successes as well.

Pauline Slack continued a rich vein of form by taking gold in the ladies longbow only days after being crowned county champion at the Cambridgeshire Indoor Championship. She also joined forces with Dave Slack and Atwood to win the county team event.

Atwood was also a winner at Sir Harry Smith when a personal best effort proved enough for victory in the double round of the mens longbow. He also claimed silver in the single round contest.

Lauren Mountfield struck gold in the junior ladies recurve while Joseph Pasqualone collected silver in the junior mens event.

Roz Pain was runner-up in the senior ladies bracket and also had to settle for second when teaming up with John Pain in the Married Couples event.

Club chairman Dave Slack said: “It was an excellent day which was well attended by competitors from in and around the home counties.

“Tournaments such as this give an opportunity for everyone from the complete novice to the more experienced - to have a go at archery.”

The event was sponsored by Whittlesey Conservative Club, Whittlesey Gun Shop, Kelleyvision Electrical and Fenland Timber, whose managing director Mark Dando was on hand to present trophies.

The Fenland club practice on Tuesday nights, Thursday nights and Saturday mornings with beginners’ classes ongoing throughout the year.
