Hockey: March denied by a Spalding fightback

A CRAZY 15 minutes ruined March Town's bid for promotion glory on Saturday.

A CRAZY 15 minutes ruined March Town's bid for promotion glory on Saturday.Needing a win to guarantee a top two spot in East Division Three North West, March were 3-0 ahead going into the final 15 minutes of their fixture against Spalding.

But Spalding launched a superb fightback to claim a shock point with goals from Mark Smith-Hughes, James Doolan and Peter Wright.

Josh Birt, Ryan Wright and a first senior goal for Tom Cole had put March in command – and they now have another chance to clinch promotion this weekend.

City of Peterborough seconds also produced a quality comeback in the Premier A Division. They were 4-1 down at Ipswich seconds, but fought back to force a 4-4 draw with goals from Tom Hagues (2), Simon Shorter and Andrew Cave.

City thirds clinched promotion from Division Two North last weekend, but a 6-1 win over Cambridge University thirds kept them on course for the title. Sam Ure and Simon Miles both scored twice.

The students recovered to beat Market Deeping 1-0 the following day. Deeping also lost 3-2 at Cambridge City thirds despite two goals from Russell Seton and they could still be relegated depending on the end-of-season league restructuring.

Deeping seconds are much happier with life. They are a win away from the Division Four North West title after thumping Spalding seconds 8-1 with goals from Henry Winfield-Chislett (3), Phil Arnold (2), Simon Wilmot, Simon Burnell and an own goal.

Deeping thirds have a crucial promotion battle with March fourths in Division Six North West this weekend. Second-placed Deeping were awarded a 3-0 win over Boston on Saturday, while March were hammering St Neots fourths 9-4 with Nathan Foad (4) and David Haselgrave (3) sharing seven of the goals.

Bourne's relegation from the Premier B Division was confirmed by a 9-0 drubbing by Wapping. It's been a tough season for Bourne whose seconds have also been relegated from Division Three North West.

But Long Sutton confirmed their safety at Premier Division level by winning 2-0 at Colchester. Gary Hales missed a penalty flick before claiming the crucial opening game.

City of Peterborough Ladies went down 2-1 at Ipswich seconds in East Division One, while Bourne drew 2-2 with Watton. Lauren Oakman scored twice as rock-bottom March lost 4-2 at Old Buckenham.

SIX of the City of Peterborough boys who recently secured a place in the National Finals of the boys Under 15 cup have now made it a double success.

Representing Cambridgeshire Under 15s in the Eastern County Championship, they won four and drew one of their five games against Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Herts and Lincs to lift the trophy.

As a result, the team will now represent the East in the National Under 15 County Championships at Cannock. Marcus Howard, Joe Houghton, Adam Wilson, Nathan Foad, Jordan Heald and Alex Vadaro were the City boys involved.
