Hockey: Jaz treble inspires a fantastic comeback

THERE was an astonishing finish to the big winner-takes-all promotion clash between March fourths and Market Deeping thirds in East Division Six North West.

THERE was an astonishing finish to the big winner-takes-all promotion clash between March fourths and Market Deeping thirds in East Division Six North West. Both sides needed to win to go up and as March led 4-1 with just 11 minutes remaining it looked like the home side would be celebrating.

But Deeping launched an amazing comeback to bag four late goals and seal a 5-4 win as well as the second promotion spot behind champions Wisbech fourths.

Jaz Phagoora was Deeping's hat-trick hero, while Ben Dalgleish and Ben Walden also netted. Nathan Foad (2), Brian Fox and Ben Wright scored for March.

Deeping's first team scored 10 goals in two Division Two North wins over the weekend. Henry Winfield-Chislett scored twice as Sudbury were seen off 5-2 before James Sharpe bagged a hat-trick in a 5-4 win over Cambridge City thirds.

Cambridge were also beaten 5-0 by City of Peterborough thirds who are now just one win away from clinching the title. Simon Miles (2), Chris Porter (2) and Aggi Milner were the city side's scorers.

City seconds are now doomed to the drop from the Premier A Division after a lacklustre display in a 4-2 defeat by Cambridge City.

Wisbech have enjoyed far more success in their first season at this level. They beat Bishop's Stortford and Bedford by 3-2 margins this weekend.

Long Sutton won for a fourth successive game in the Premier B Division. Gary Hales and Ben Smith were the men on target in a 2-0 win over Bury St Edmunds.

City of Peterborough fifths were held 0-0 up until half-time by their own sixth team in Division Four North West before the youngest player on the pitch turned the game. Thirteen year-old Matt Anderson claimed two goals for the senior side before Simon Buckley added a third.

City of Peterborough Ladies remain in danger of the drop in East Division One North after losing their final fixture 1-0 to Ipswich & East Suffolk.

City are fifth from bottom, but a league re-structuring could still see them go down. March are definitely down after losing 20 of their 21 fixtures and conceding 130 goals in the process.

Bourne were the latest team to enjoy playing them, with a 5-2 win. Lauren Oakman and Emma Baker scored for March but it was not enough.

MARCH hosted a friendly festival for under nine and under 11 teams on Sunday when displaying skills was more important than winning matches.
