HISTORY was made in the Brummitt Mixed Tournament at Bretton Gate over the weekend as Ragamuffins emerged victorious after the final was determined by a penalty dribble shoot-out!For the first time in 52 years a drawn final didn't mean a shared trophy. Instead competition organisers decided to find a winner by asking selected members of the competing teams to run forward from the 25-yard line and beat a goalkeeper within a 10-second time frame.
Ragamuffins and regular rivals Jurassic Beavers - this was their third final meeting in five years - had fought out an entertaining 1-1 draw in normal time.
Gary Hales fired the dinosaurs in front after five minutes before Andy Appleton replied for the scruffs with a scorching reverse stick shot high into the net just before the break.
Both sides had chances to win, but it seemed inevitable that the chaos of a penalty dribble would be required to settle the outcome.
After five attempts each it was still deadlocked at 2-2 with brothers David and Andrew Appleton scoring for Ragamuffins, and Gareth Terrett and Mike Yeoman netting for Beavers.
Terrett though missed his second attempt leaving David Appleton the opportunity to take the trophy and complete a hat-trick of final wins for his team. Ragamuffins keeper TJ West was immediately mobbed by his team-mates for his part in the success.
Jurassic were competing in their ninth successive final and their record now reads four wins and five seconds. Yeoman and team-mate Aggi Milner have now played in an amazing 42 finals between them.
Both finalists remained unbeaten in a two-day tournament which featured a new format. Sixteen teams competed in four groups of four on Saturday with the best and worst split into main event and plate groups on Sunday.
The top side in each of Sunday's groups met in a final. The Plate Final was also decided by a penalty dribble shoot-out with Bourne pipping Tornadoes 2-0.
Julian Catto and Ian Craig were the Bourne scorers, while Tim Beaver's goal remained intact from five Tornadoes' attempts.
The Jack Rose Fair Play Trophy winners were GPO.
