Hockey: City of Peterborough playing for their National League future

THERE is a faint whiff of optimism around Bretton Gate as City of Peterborough prepare for their final National Conference East fixture of the season.

THERE is a faint whiff of optimism around Bretton Gate as City of Peterborough prepare for their final National Conference East fixture of the season.Under normal circumstances, and taking into account all known form, visitors Old Loughtonians would be expected to romp to victory against one of the divisional whipping boys on Sunday (2pm).

But Old Loughts have nothing to play for except their pride, while City have their National League life on the line.

City probably need to win to have a chance of avoiding a return to regional hockey, but even that might not be enough. Chelmsford, the team City have to overtake, are hosting rock-bottom Ipswich in their final fixture.

Defeat or a draw for Ipswich would almost certainly ensure that City have another chance of effecting a great escape via the relegation play-offs, but it's also possible that they could finish bottom and be immediately doomed to East League hockey.
