Hockey: City men are hoping to put out the 'Fire'
CITY of Peterborough host one of the most important games in the history of the club at Bretton Gate tomorrow (1pm).
CITY of Peterborough host one of the most important games in the history of the club at Bretton Gate tomorrow (1pm).Firbrands from Bristol are the visitors and National League survival is at stake. Only one team from City, Firebrands and Formby will still be in the elite competition next season.
A three-way round robin competition will determine the survivor. Firebrands and Formby got things under way last weekend with a 2-2 draw, probably the best result City could have expected.
A win tomorrow would eliminate Firebrands and leave City just needing to avoid defeat in Formby the following Saturday. If City lose they will be doomed to playing in the East Premier A Division next season - a draw would mean a winner-takes-all game in Formby.
City manager Jon Short said: "The next eight days are the most important in the life of the club and I hope we get the big crowd we need tomorrow.
"We are going all out for the win as that will leave us in a good position for the long trip to Formby where we would hope to retain our National League status.
"We beat Northampton Saints in a friendly last week in a game designed to blow away our cobwebs. It went well, but we will need to tighten up in midfield and defensively against superior opposition tomorrow."
All three teams struggled defensively during the regular season, but City had by far the worst record of the three in the traditionally stronger Eastern Conference.
Firebrands finished next to bottom in the West after collecting just 16 points, Formby mustered a mere 12 points in the North, but City scraped together a paltry seven points.
Forward Brendan Sullivan and midfielder Carl Daniels are the only City absentees tomorrow.
IT'S also a big weekend for City's Under 15 side who aim to prove they are the best side in the country at their age.
It will be a tough task as National League Premier Division side Cannock are among the opposition in the National Club Finals at the University of Birmingham.
City qualified as East champions and open against Midlands Champions Cannock tomorrow. Teddington and Bromley & Beckenham are the other teams involved in a round robin format which finishes on Sunday.
CITY of Peterborough Ladies thirds tackle Ely in the final of the Cambs Premier Division League Cup at Perse, School Cambridge tomorrow.
