Wisbech hand the students a lesson as they return to action in style

WISBECH returned from the mid-winter break in superb style to hammer Cambridge University seconds 5-1.

The weather may have been mild during the East Men’s League’s four-week break but ironically the winter frosts arrived on the weekend it resumed and many games were called off.

Wisbech had beaten Premier B basement side Harpenden 4-2 in their final game of 2011 and they returned to action in even more convincing style on Saturday although the 5-1 scoreline perhaps flattered them.

Gav Johnstone thought he had scored from Wisbech’s first short corner but his effort was ruled out.

The opener came soon after though when Brad Apted weaved through the middle and his shot took a wicked deflection before looping over the keeper.

Further goals from Johnstone, Aaron Cobb, Dan Martell and Sam Blunt gave Wisbech a comfortable margin but it was not such a happy afternoon for City of Peterborough seconds in the same division.

Elliott Stevens fired City ahead following good work by Chris Porter but struggling St Ives equalised to dent the hosts’ promotion hopes.

City coach Gareth Andrew called for patience during his half-time team talk but his side seemed to confuse patience for lethargy judging by their disappointing performance after the break.

Spalding came from 2-0 down to beat basement side St Ives seconds 3-2 in Division Three North West, despite being reduced to nine men in the second half.

The result moved them up to second while Hugo Atkins netted twice as Wisbech thirds beat Ely seconds 3-2 in the same division.

Iain Green scored twice as second-placed City of Peterborough fifths beat Horncastle 3-2 in an ill-tempered Division Four North West game while Long Sutton seconds were in fine form to hammer St Neots seconds 6-1.

City of Peterborough slipped to a disappointing 3-1 defeat at St Ives in the East Women’s League Division One NorthLisa Deacon scoring, but the club’s fourths continue to impress, beating Wisbech thirds 4-0 in the Cambridgeshire Ladies League Division Two.

Fiona Macdonald scored twice for the unbeaten league leaders who have won nine of their 10 games so far.
