Hockey preview: Terrific ten are ready to return to Whitgift
TEN of the Thomas Deacon Academy team who produced a battling performance at last weekend’s National Indoor Schools Finals at Whitgift in Croydon return to the same venue with City of Peterborough this weekend.
TDA finished fourth in their group last week - winning one and drawing one of their four games - and this weekend the youngsters hope to impress in the National Club Indoor Finals.
Adam Wilson joins the ‘terrific 10’ as City look to progress from a tough-looking pool which is almost identical to the one the club found themselves in two years ago, with the exception of Isca replacing Taunton.
On that occasion, just like TDA last week, City recorded a one, a draw and two defeats and most of that side returned to last year’s finals.
The City squad certainly won’t be lacking in experience at this level as Marcus Howard attends his eighth national final with Jordan Heald, Nathan Foad and Joe Houghton all just one behind him.
City reached the national finals with an impressive performance at the regional finals in Colchester, where both the Under 16s and Under 18s were crowned champions.
The Under 16s travel to Wolverhampton for their national finals and despite having to rebuild their squad the team have impressed.
They will also face stiff competition with last year’s finalists Ashmoor including most of the Dartmoor College team who won the National Schools Under 16 indoor title last week.
Ben Rhydding, who knocked City out of the outdoor cup at the quarter-final stage last year, and last year’s semi-finalists Beeston are also in the same group along with National League outfit Havant.
Scott Howard, younger brother of Marcus, will be playing in his fourth National Indoor Under 16s finals and his fifth national finals in total.
But despite the tough competition, coach Mike Yeoman - who will travel with the Under 18s with support from team manager Rob Fisher and leave the Under 16s in the capable hands of Andrea Howard (coach) and David Heald (manager) - is confident the club’s sides will perform well.
He said: “I believe both teams may be in with a chance if they can get a good start to the tournament.
“They have certainly all put in a lot of hard work to learn the indoor game and they thoroughly deserve to be there. It’s such a shame that I can’t be with both teams.”
City’s Under 16 line up in Pool B while Pool A will have just four teams following the withdrawal of Northern runners-up Wakefield.
