City of Peterborough Ladies survived a terrific Spalding fightback yesterday (March 5) to keep their title hopes in East Division One North alive.
City led 3-0 at half-time against a Spalding side who had seen relegation confirmed the week before, but conceded two goals and needed goalkeeper Becki Warr to make some vital late saves to preserve the three points.
Anna Faux, who played well in multiple positions during the game, opened the scoring early in the first half. City then continued to dominate both the possession and territory to score two more goals from Captain Lauren Finding and Jess Amps to make the half-time score 3-0.
Spalding struck back soon after the re-start and were within a goal with 15 minutes to go, but couldn’t find an equaliser in a tense finish,
Defender Kate Dixon won the City player-of-the-match award.
City are now second, two points behind leaders Wisbech, with two games to play, Wisbech are firm title favourites following their 4-1 win at Lincoln yesterday as their final two matches area against struggling opposition.
Wisbech blitzed a decent Lincoln side before the break scoring four goals without reply through Lisa Williamson (2), Katie Rodger and Jane Peggs,
The top two go up though and City will probably need to win their final two games at third-placed Norwich and at Bedford seconds to have a shot at promotion.
