Hayward scores five in Wisbech Grammar School wins

EIGHT boys’ teams from Wisbech Grammar School performed strongly against Ratcliffe College, Leicestershire, scoring a total of 24 goals and conceding only six.

There were victories for all the junior A teams, with the Under 12 side netting eight goals, which included five from Oliver Hayward and three from Arran Shipley.

This followed the team’s 1-0 win against Witham Hall Preparatory School, Bourne, and a 10-0 victory against St Hugh’s School, Woodhall Spa.

The Under 13 team continued its winning ways, dominating the majority of the match to win 4-1 after an 11-0 victory against St Hugh’s and a 4-1 win against Witham Hall.

There was also success for the Under 14s, who achieved a 3-2 win after a goalless draw against The Perse School, Cambridge, and 1-0 wins over Newport Free Grammar School, Saffron Walden, and the Thomas Deacon Academy.

At senior level, the second XI notched a hard-fought 3-1- win against Ratcliffe after defeating Gresham’s, in Holt, 2-1 the previous week.

Only the first XI suffered a defeat, losing the match by a single goal. They were unable to convert their chances from open play, with shots being cleared off the line.

They defended well but succumbed to a late short corner strike.

The development of the B team fixture list has given more boys a chance to play competitive matches and the Under 13 B side followed up its 1-0 win over Witham Hall with a goalless draw against Ratcliffe.

For the Under 15/Under 14 B team it was a chance to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat against Gresham’s the week before with a 2-0 victory.

The school also fielded an Under 13 B team and an Under 12/Under 13 C team against Gresham’s, giving all of the younger pupils a chance to represent the school.

The Under 13 B team dominated the game, but was unable to make its chances count and drew 0-0.

For many pupils in the Under 13 C side this was their first competitive match and they worked hard together against a more experienced Gresham’s team.

However, they were unable to put away their chances and the opposition scored in the last minute to win 1-0.
