Hockey report: CITY of Peterborough slipped to three defeats in two days as they fine-tuned their preparations for the resumption of the National League East Conference season.

Player-coach Gareth Andrew was the only player to find the target for City, scoring five goals as his side lost to Cannock, Harleston Magpies and Olton and West Warwicks.

Jon Peckett, who has 58 international appearances under his belt, was due to feature in all three games after returning to the club where he began but the 30 year-old was a late withdrawal and will also miss Saturday’s trip to North London outfit Old Loughtonians.

In his absence it was another ex-international, Andrew, who led the way against his former side and City came out of the game with plenty of credit.

Cannock are currently sitting second in the National League Premier Division but after going into the break at 1-1, Andrew - the second top-scorer in the East Conference - fired City ahead early into the second period.

City continued to hold their own until the final 20 minutes when Cannock stepped up a gear and the visitors went on to win 5-2.

It defeat wasn’t painful enough, Carl Daniels suffered a broken nose.

Two further games took place at Bretton Gate yesterday, the depleted City first-team supplemented with players from the second team who had narrowly beaten basement side Harpenden 2-1 in the East Men’s League Premier B 24 hours earlier.

City lost 3-1 against Harleston, a side they have already beaten in the East Conference this season, although the scoreline perhaps flattered the visitors.

They were then well beaten by a fresher Olton and West Warwicks side who recorded a 7-2 success.
