An initiative to get women back into hockey starts at City of Peterborough’s Bretton Gate base tomorrow (May 13)

‘This Girl Can’ is a joint initiative between Back To Hockey and Sport England. It’s a national programme celebrating active women around the country

The six-week Back to Hockey programme, supported by Berlei sports bras, is available at Bretton Gate every Wednesday (6-7pm) until June 15, City of Peterborough are running mixed sessions for men and women.

The informal sessions are for women who want to get back into fitness, but may not have played hockey for a number of years, along with those who want to play for the first time.

They can learn new skills and discover how to play from scratch before putting it all into practice with bite-size games. What’s more, many of the clubs offering Back to Hockey also get together to host coffee mornings and organise dinners with their teams, so it’s ideal for socialising with like-minded people.

Finding a local session couldn’t be easier; simply visit www.englandhockey.co.uk/backtohockey.

Beverley Blackburn, England Hockey’s Participation Manager and hockey coach of seven years, says: “It’s an exciting time to come back to hockey as so many women have been inspired by the ‘This Girl Can’ campaign and want to give the sport a try in their back garden.

“We welcome all abilities and are keen to show that hockey has come a long way from the days of muddy pitches and waiting around for a touch of the ball! The Back to Hockey sessions are also aimed at those who played during their school days but may

have moved away from the game because it became too time consuming, competitive and physically demanding.”
