Gymnastics: Smith to unveil new routine in world finals

Louis Smith has revealed he has an extra trick up his sleeve as he aims to overhaul his rivals after reaching the pommel horse final at the Gymnastics World Championships.

Louis Smith has revealed he has an extra trick up his sleeve as he aims to overhaul his rivals after reaching the pommel horse final at the Gymnastics World Championships. The Olympic bronze medallist claimed the third highest score in Tuesday's qualifying at London's O2 Arena as he finished behind China's Zhang Hongtao and Hungary's Krisztian Berki.

But the 20-year-old from Eye is ready to increase the difficulty of his routine from 6.7 to 7 to bring home the gold medal in front of his home crowd on Saturday.

He said: "I haven't done it in competition before. I've done it training hundreds of times and it is my second best routine.

"We wouldn't think about doing it at a World Championships if there was any risk.

"I just hope things work out on the day and we are just looking at what we need to do."

The Huntingdon Club gymnast has refused to accept the tag of favourite, despite the absence of the two men who beat him at last year's Olympics.

"I may not have any people who beat me from Beijing here, but there are a lot of people who didn't go to Beijing who are here that are really good," he said.

"I saw Krisztian's routine, it was a beautiful routine. I'm sure we'll have a very good competition in the final."
