Grimsby won't rush decision over Posh's Bennett bid

GRIMSBY will not be rushed into a decision over whether or not to sell their teenage captain Ryan Bennett to Peterborough United.

GRIMSBY will not be rushed into a decision over whether or not to sell their teenage captain Ryan Bennett to Peterborough United.Mariners chairman John Fenty has confirmed that Posh director of football Barry Fry made an increased offer for the highly-rated 19 year-old during the Football League's annual Chairmen's conference in Portugal this week.

But Fenty insisted other clubs are also chasing a player who remains under contract at Blundell Park.

Fenty said: "Although we have received a substantially improved offer from Peterborough, we are not in a position to respond until I return from the Football League meeting and have evaluated further interest being shown by other clubs."

Meanwhile Grimsby manager Mike Newell has blasted Bennett's agent Darren Bosson for claiming the player would relish the opportunity of Championship football next season.

Newell said: "Ryan's agent is like most agents. If the Football Association and the Football League did their jobs properly then the game wouldn't be in the mess is in right now, and it is in a mess."

The attraction of playing for Posh rather than Grimsby is easy to understand. Grimsby officials have been thrilled by the sale of 400 season tickets for their League Two campaign, while Posh had to take their season tickets off the market last night after selling more than 5,600 for an eagerly-awaited Championship campaign.
