Peterborough-based trainers David Pruhs and Richard Devenish are a step closer to getting the hands on the big money in the Peterborough Puppy Derby following the heats last night (June 1).

The city trainers both had two dogs bound through to the semi-finals on a very wet night at the Fengate stadium.

The action began with a battle of the Ballymac’s in heat one. Ballymac Santose produced a superb run from the front to take the win for Devenish, just holding off hot favourite Ballymac Elvis while Dranoel finished third to sneak through to the semi-finals.

It was then the turn of Pruhs to reap the reward of home comforts when 8/1 shot Kooga Klammer burst from the traps to land second just behind favourite Holdem Rio. Romford racer Droopys Ring put in a solid run to clinch third to make the cut.

Heat three was all about Droopys Trapeze. The Newcastle based dog was labelled as the favourite to be crowned Peterborough Puppy Derby winner before the off and he duly delivered by breezing to victory ahead of Lightfoot Mikel and Piemans Rocket.

It was then the turn of Droopys Polly to tear the field apart in heat four after making the most of a clear inside run. She took command of the race and finished streets ahead of the chasing pack. Newinn Hulk and All About Class stole the minor pl moneaces to progress to the semi-finals.

Evens favourite Newinn Shadow looked the part in the penultimate heat by recording the fastest time of the night while Savana Lord pipped Liosgarbh Nealy for second on the line.

Pruhs’ night got even better in the final heat when hot prospect Killian Infanta lived up to high expectations with a convincing win for the local trainer. Droopys Country finished second and Ballymac McCole crossed the line in third to boost Devenish’s chances of closing in on the £8,500 prize.

The 18 dogs will now return to the Peterborough track to do battle in the semi-finals next Wednesday (June 8)
