DEEPING schoolgirl Maisy Turner's rapid rise through the golfing ranks continued at the weekend when she became the youngest ever winner of the Peterborough Milton Ladies Championship title.Turner (14) put together back to back rounds of 84 in Sunday's 36-hole showpiece to top the leaderboard and land her biggest prize to date, despite later admitting that she had been far from her best.

She said: "I was absolutely delighted to win but I am slightly disappointed that I didn't go a bit lower.

"My driving was a bit wayward on both rounds but I scrambled well and made sure I made up for it with some good approach shots and my putting.

"I felt fairly comfortable on both rounds and won fairly comfortably in the end. Had I been a bit better off the tee though I would have expected to be quite a bit lower. But I am not complaining as this is the best thing I have ever won."

And while the eight-handicapper's triumph may have been helped by the absence of reigning champion Alex Banham and Georgina Dunn, neither player got their hands on the trophy at such a tender age.

The fact that three years ago Turner had not even picked up a golf club makes the achievement all the more remarkable.

"I have not been playing the game too long but of course I am really pleased with the way it has gone for me so far," Turner added.

"My handicap keeps coming down and winning a big title like this one really gives me the confidence to think that by the end of the year I could get down as low as five, which is my main aim.

"A good performance at the English Under 15 Girls Championships in Warwickshire later this month will help that and then I have the English Schools coming up so I hope I can keep my good form going."

There were also celebrations at Milton for net winner Kerri Cole while Barbara McCarthy took runners-up slot in both the net and gross competitions.
