Golf: Alex still queen of the greens at Elton Furze

QUEEN of local golf Alex Banham saw her double bubble burst at the weekend despite a successful defence of her Elton Furze ladies title.Last year 20 year-old student Banham, claimed the title at her home club and at Peterborough Milton and she was keen to repeat the unique double again this year.

Sadly upon her return from Florida where she studies at Stetson University, the Northants county star realised that due to a clash of dates her dreams of another twin triumph would never materialise.

Unlike last year when Milton held their club championships the week before Elton, this time round both competitions were held on the same day meaning Banham was left with a tough choice to make.

She said: "I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with the clash of dates and you would have thought that they would have looked at that so it wouldn't happen.

"As it is I decided to play Elton as it is my home club and of the two it was the one I wanted to play in but it is not ideal. I was hoping to reduce my handicap from three this summer and 36 holes at Milton would have been a great chance to do that."

As it was, a one over 73 followed by a 77 was just enough to secure the Elton title from Wendy Lodder who pushed Banham all the way. But despite a faltering back nine in her final round, Banham kept her cool to take the crown.

She said: "I thought I played really well in the end and I had to as Wendy pushed me hard all the way and only ended up three shots back. So it was closer than last year when I won by a far larger margin.

"The back nine of my second round was a bit wayward but after going one over par in my first round I had that margin of error and always felt comfortable about taking it home."

But there was no time to celebrate the win as Banham headed straight off to represent Northants at the Six Counties Championship at Ladbrooke Park Golf Club.
