Golf: Piff's Milton title tilt started in Indonesia
FROM South Asia to Stamford - Peterborough Milton's new Senior Open champion has certainly come a long way with the game of golf.
FROM South Asia to Stamford - Peterborough Milton's new Senior Open champion has certainly come a long way with the game of golf.Burghley Park stalwart David Piff first picked up a club while working as a company director for Newage in Jakarta 20 years ago to give himself 'something to do with his spare time'.
But more than two decades later what started as the most casual of acquaintances has ballooned into a passion which last Thursday led to him winning his greatest prize in the game.
And having waited to the ripe old age of 74 to get his hands on a big title, the 20-handicapper did it in style, amassing an impressive stableford haul of 45 points to win the prestigious event.
Piff said: "I am a member at Burghley Park but I do enjoy playing all the senior opens if I can and in particular I enjoy it at Milton as it is a wonderful course. And I am thrilled to have won their Open after a good few years of trying.
"I only took up the game for something to do in my fifties when living out in Indonesia but it is something I have stuck at and now I try to play as often as I can.
"And all that practice seems to be paying off as I played one of my best ever rounds at Milton. I started by picking up 11 points on the first four holes and I just managed to keep it all going.
"The guys I was playing with were also a big help as they realised I could be in the frame and gave me plenty of encouragement on the way round."
In total 147 competitors took part in the event from clubs all across the area, much to the delight of senior captain and former Posh star Bernard Shaw, who saw the coffers for his chosen charity (NSPCC) swollen by over 600 on the day.
He said: "The standard of golf was as high as ever and although I didn't have my best round (Shaw ended with 25 points), it was a great day allround."
THERE were mixed fortunes for a trio of Elton Furze players in the Lagonda Trophy at Gog Magog.
Adam Pike, Jody Greenall and Jamie Hibbert took part in the rain-hit event but only Greenall made the top 20 after completing his four rounds in 290 shots - two over par.
The winner was Dave Coupland of Boston Golf Club who finished with 278 shots.
RUTLAND County senior Bob Goddard reached a personal milestone in a match against Boston last week.
Despite being on the end of a 6-2 defeat, it was all smiles for Goddard who managed to notch up his 200th match for the club.
GREETHAM junior Tom Caldicott has had his handicap cut from five to 3.7 after equalling the course record.
Playing the Valley course, Caldicott shot a superb one under par 67 to equal the mark set by fellow young gun Sam Sharp last year.
THE qualifying round for the Douglas Bader Greensomes took place at Burghley at the weekend. Paul Evans and Caroline Chambers won the event with 40 points and will now go through to the regional event at Market Rasen.
ENTRIES are still being sought for the Single Figure Handicap Open at Burghley later this month - for more information call the club on 01780 753789.
ELTON Furze trio Jody Greenall, Adam Pike and Ed Conduit were in the Cambs team that beat Norfolk 7-5 in the Anglian League at Gog Magog.
It was sweet revenge for Cambs, who lost to Norfolk in the corresponding fixture last year.
Greenall said: "That defeat last year cost us the title so we definitely owed them one."
Cambs details:
Foursomes: L. Yearn & S. Jarvis lost 4&3, J. Greenall & D. Milburn won 2&1, R. Mallett & O. Davies won 5&3, A. Pike & E. Conduit lost 3&2.
