Golf: Malcolm so pleased they saw his ace

IMAGINE the frustration of hitting a hole-in-one only to realise that nobody had actually seen you do it.

IMAGINE the frustration of hitting a hole-in-one only to realise that nobody had actually seen you do it.Well that was the case for Old Nene senior Malcolm Haynes when he last pulled off the feat more than 20 years ago during a rare solo round.

It has long been a sore point for the 18-handicapper and for the past two decades the 67-year-old has been striving to repeat the feat with no success.

But finally, last Tuesday, he managed to pull it off again.

Playing in an official club medal competition, Haynes sunk his long-awaited ace at the 139-yard sixth hole and this time there were plenty of people about to share the moment.

Haynes said: "Last time I did it no one saw it so it was a bit like it never really happened but this was different. Back then no one saw it and as it was a fun round, officially it never really happened so I had been hoping against hope that I would do it again.

"I used a six-iron and just bumped it onto the green. It then rolled 20-odd feet before hitting the pin and dropping into the hole.

"It was an amazing feeling especially as this one was official as I was in a medal with good pals Martin Balls and Robert Cade.

"In fact Martin was so excited about it he wanted to dash down to the hole before taking his shot to make sure it was actually in there."

AND just to prove you don't have to play the game for years to reach perfection, two Orton Meadows members also managed to hit holes-in-one last week.

At one of the club's popular fun days, Barbara Palmer joined the elite with an ace at the par three seventh hole while Stuart Randall also pulled an ace from his sleeve during the recent two-course competition held at Orton and Thorpe Wood.

For Palmer it was a real surpise having only earned a handicap rating earlier this year and while the ball dropped quickly enough the achievement certainly took a while to sink in. "I couldn't believe it and first of all I thought that the ball must have been taken by a magpie or something," she said.

"It is certainly the highpoint of my short career as I have only been playing for 18 months and feel very lucky to have done something a lot of people never achieve.

"I already had the golfing bug but this has made it even worse and I cannot wait to get out on the course again."
