Golf: Jody is the cream of the Cambs crop again

Jody Greenall has ended an up and down season on a high note by winning the Wheeler Salver.Greenall, 34, lifted the coveted Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union scratch title at Gog Magog after edging a tense affair with county team mate Stuart Phillips.
Former county champion and previous Wheeler winner Greenall was the model of consistency as he closed out for a one hole win.
And having been part of the Cambridgeshire team which lost the Anglian League title after losing to Lincolnshire in their final fixture, Greenall was understandably pleased to finally get his hands on some silverware.
He said: "Up until last Thursday it had been a disappointing season for me with the Anglian League result the worst of all. We were so close again and to miss out on the last day of the league is gutting for all the boys.
"So winning this is a great way to finish for me. It is a very high standard and I had to beat some very good players to reach the final, not least of course Stuart.
"I have won it before back in 2001 so it is nice to get back to the final and come out on top after such a tight battle."
That may just be the understatement of the year. Greenall got his nose in front after winning the first and fifth holes but a par at the sixth saw Phillips move to within one hole with three quarters of the course still to play.
And remarkably that was the way it stayed, with Greenall matching his opponent shot for shot to halve the remaining 12 holes.
"It is a very unusual thing to halve that many holes but that was the way it went, we just couldn't shrug each other off.
"The pressure increased with every hole and it didn't get any better at the last.
"Stuart missed a chance to take the hole, leaving me with 3 or 4 feet to halve again for the win, it was nerve wracking stuff but I kept it together and was delighted when the ball dropped."
The Wheeler Salver is open to the top 64 players in the Cambridgeshire Area Golf Union and is played in a knockout format with Greenall beating Robert Southall, Robert Setchell, Andy Wool and Toby Crisp on his way to the final.
THE Open Pairs event attracted 116 players from 32 different clubs to Burghley Park last weekend.
All pairings played 36 holes with the morning rounds in better ball medal format with the stableford format used after lunch.
It was the home pairing of Paul Evans and Francis Williams who took top spot from Peter Hickman and Nobby Hall.
THERE was joy for James Codling in the September medal at Old Nene when he struck a hole-in-one at the 139 yard sixth hole.
