Golf: Greetham pair play aces at same hole

LIGHTNING struck twice at Greetham Valley over the weekend.

LIGHTNING struck twice at Greetham Valley over the weekend. After more than 30 years of trying, club stalwart Bob Beverley cost himself a decent bottle of Scotch after nailing an ace at the sixth hole of the Lakes Course during a team match between the 'Bs' and the 'Seconds'.

And what made the feat all the more remarkable was not only the fact that the rules of the match meant Beverley was playing his way round with just three clubs, but that it was repeated the following day.

Playing in Greetham's big Invitational event, Paul Holliday pulled off the very same shot at the sixth to land himself the nearest-to-the-pin prize.

MORE than 120 players from far and wide took part in the Rutland County Senior Open last weekend.

But it was locals who filled the top four places on the leaderboard come close of play.

And making the most of his course knowledge Graham Mason came out on top with 36 stableford points, one ahead of John Mason and Arthur Dethick in second and third.

THE local lasses missed out at the Elton Furze Ladies Open.

With the greens running at light speed, it was the visitors who made the most of the opportunities and it was Dawn Glennie from John O'Gaunt and Sue Funston from Saffron Waldon who took top spot with 44 points.

Runners-up were Jo Nice and Sandra Jerram from Wyboston Lakes, who finished two points further back in the three-quarter handicap stableford event.

THERE could well be a tense atmosphere in the Anderson household this week after last week's senior medal match at Elton Furze.

Andy Anderson was the main man after snatching top spot with a net 75 - beating wife Sue into second place on countback after the pair finished on identical scores.

THE Peterborough Milton Pro Am was a big success with players from across the region making the trip to take part.

But after the dust had settled there were some familiar faces standing on top of the pile with the Double Top team winning the event.

Led by professional Stephen Bennett from Waltham Windmill Golf Club, John Double, club secretary Andy Izod and Tom Edwards were all part of the winning team.

Double Top finished ahead of a team from Glen Course Golf Club in second place.

MILTON have cruised through to the final of the Northamptonshire Handicap League.

The Milton maestros notched up an impressive 16-4 win at Northampton Golf Club to book their place in the showpiece against Collingtree Park at Priors Hall on October 11.

Team captain Dave Wright said: "Beating Northampton Golf Club twice was particularly sweet as they beat is twice in the qualifying league last year."
