Golf: Ed has a few tipples and topples his Elton rivals

A FEW lunchtime lagers proved the key to success for serial champion Ed Conduit at Elton Furze on Saturday.Unlike most players who hit the driving range between rounds, Conduit hit the bar to settle his nerves after his first round before heading back out to land his 11th club championship crown.

The 31-year decided on the unorthodox approach after carding a 'disappointing' 73 in the morning and there is no doubt a liquid lunch put plenty of fizz back into his game.

Following his tee-side tipple, Conduit's fortunes transformed as he found his legendary touch round the Elton greens to put together an impeccable round of 64 and take the title by two shots from runner-up Adam Scott.

Conduit said: "I thought I played okay for the first few holes of my opening round but it got away from me a bit over the last 10 where I seemed unable to sink a putt.

"My strength is my short game and yet I was really struggling around the greens and knew I needed to do something to turn it round for the afternoon."

"But instead of getting wound up about it I decided to sink a few pints and it set me up nicely for the afternoon as I went out there and played some good stuff.

"Luckily I was only three shots behind the halfway leader Olly Fullerton so I knew if I could put together a decent round I was in with a great chance."

Eight birdies and just two dropped shots after lunch was certainly decent enough, but the undisputed king of Elton reckons there could well be more to come.

The course record at Elton Furze currently stands at 62, a figure set by 2008 champion Jamie Hibbert - a man who finished third this time around.

And according to Conduit that mark may not last for long.

He added: "The 64 was great and Jamie's record round was something else but I know there is a 59 out there somewhere.

"That is not to say that it will definitely be this season but I know it can be done.

"Of course it would have to be a perfect round of golf, but I know this course so well now as I have been playing it since it opened."

"I am sure one day it could happen."
