BARRY Fry has stepped down as chairman of Peterborough United.
Irish millionaire businessman Darragh MacAnthony was introduced to a packed press conference today (September 18) as the biggest signing in the history of the club. The 30 year-old Marbella-based businessman has already invested enough cash in the club to become chairman. He confirmed his intention to become sole owner of the club in the future.
Mr Fry is still the owner of the club and will continue at London Road as director of football.
MacAnthony, who made his fortune in overseas real estate, said: "I looked at three or four clubs but I chose Posh after seeing the Big Ron Manager documentary and then coming down to meet Barry.
"I'm passionate about football and its always been an aim of mine to become heavily involved in a club.
"There is potential at this club and in this city and I fell in love with the place as soon as I got here.
"I have no ulterior motives. I expect to lose money but I am willing to do that to take the club where I want to go which is the Premiership.
"That's the ultimate goal and why shouldn't we all dream?"
MacAnthony also owns media companies and, according to Fry, his investment will be a massive boost to the club.
Fry said: "I have taken the club as far as I can. I have no more resources to put money in and I firmly believe it is in the best interests for the football club as well as the city of Peterborough.
"Darragh is like me as he has so much passion and commitment but his expertise in business will help the club enormously.
"Darragh is purely interested in football. He has made his money in property but he is not interested in any property deal currently ongoing at the club."
Fry first bought Posh in the summer of 1996 but sold the club to city entrepreneur Peter Boizot the following year while staying on as manager.
Fry became Posh owner again in October 2003 after taking control of the playing side of the club. Fry is the longest-serving manager in Posh history having occupied the London Road hotseat for nine years.
What do you think of Barry Fry's decision to step down as Posh chairman?
