Football: The double Diamonds work wonders again

DEEPING Diamonds Blacks completed another delightful double in the Fenland League at the weekend.

DEEPING Diamonds Blacks completed another delightful double in the Fenland League at the weekend.Already the Under 12 Division One champions, the Diamonds sparkled again in the League Cup final to beat Whittlesey 2-1 and complete the league and cup double for the second year running.

Whittlesey actually started the stronger but found the Deeping defence in determined mood.

And it was Deeping who struck first with a well taken goal from Chloe Earth from the edge of the area.

Whittlesey were soon back on level terms though when scoring from a corner.

Just before half-time the Diamonds took the lead again when Amie Ford beat two players and slotted the ball past the Whittlsey keeper.

The second half was very tense with both sides having chances but the Diamonds managed to hold on.

Coach John McHattie is now looking forward to stepping up to nine-a-side football with his talented bunch next season.

Peterborough Azure concluded their league programme with a 5-0 defeat at Rolls Royce Ladies but the scoreline was not a true reflection of play.

Azure went close on a number of occasions with striker Gee Sturgess see an early effort bounce off the inside of the post.

And Rolls Royce opened their account when a ball was lobbed over keeper Laura Priddy and hit the inside of one post, rolled along the line and then hit the other post before going in!

A second goal from the visitors gave them a 2- 0 interval lead but Azure had actually had more clear-cut chances to score, with midfielder Jade Ovendale proving to be a real thorn in the visitors side

Despite the game having no real effect on league standings, the second half was played with real commitment by both teams and again Azure had chances to get themselves back in the game before further goals put Royce out of reach.

It may have been the last league game of the season for Azure but they are in action again this Sunday when playing host to Division One champions Sandiacre in the quarter-final of the League Cup.

Azure boss Steve Jason will be hoping luck will be on his side against a team from a division below but who won the title in style by remaining undefeated all season.

"I guess we'll start as the underdogs even though they are a league below us," he said.

"But we've shown this season that we can raise our own game when we're playing the top teams so I'm hopeful that our season will not be ending on Sunday.

If Azure get the right result on Sunday they play at home the following week against Hinkley Town ladies in the semi final of the competition.
