WORLD OF SPORT: Money talks, medical miracle, end of an era

Seeing Jamie Vardy (above), Riyad Mahrez and N’Golo Kante linked with lesser teams like Arsenal and Chelsea in the last few weeks has been quite dispiriting.

If they go it’s another nail in the coffin of those who believe romance lives on in the Premier League. The players will talk about new challenges and the chance to play for a big-name club. Some will even claim to have supported their new club since they were lads.

It’s all nonsense of course. Money is the only language professional footballers understand. Always has been, always will be.

ENOUGH MONEY FOR A MIRACLE

The employment tribunal case involving Dr Eva Carneiro (above), Jose Mourinho and Chelsea FC was staggering. Not least because the doc was paid £285k a year. For that sort of money I’d expect a medical miracle or two, like curing the inability of a hulking brute like Branislav Ivanovic to stay on his feet after mild contact.

GOLDEN ERA OF TENNIS IS OVER

The so-called golden era of mens’ tennis is over. Four great players has become one and it’s spoiling the spectacle. Sport needs surprise and shock as well as greatness to enthral, but the mens’ singles results are disappointingly easy to predict. Novak Djokovic is in a class of his own. Even the world number two can’t challenge him.
