Former Peterborough United centre-back Gaby Zakuani has made a dramatic return to London Road.
The 28 year-old left Posh abrubtly in the middle of last season after being deemed surplus to requirements by the club management team. He spent the second half of last season playing the Greek Superleague for Kalloni FC.
But Posh boss Darren Ferguson failed to find a reliable central defensive partnership in the second-half of last season hence the return of Zakuani who is expected to be the ideal partner for highly-rated youngster Jack Baldwin.
Zakuani has played 202 games for Posh since first moving to London Road from Fulham in the 2008-09 season. The DR Congo international has been a key part of two successful Posh promotions from League One.
Zakuani admitted he felt like a kid at Christmas after completing his return today (June 8).
He said: “I have unfinished business at Posh. I missed the club and it hurt me when they were beaten in the play-offs.
“I had a great time in Greece, but it feels great to be back. I can’t wait to get started again.
“I feel like a kid at Christmas. I appreciate the great relationship I have with the fans and hope I can become a leader for this young squad. I see a lot of Ryan Bennett in Jack Baldwin and if we are selected together I am confident we can play well together.”
Ferguson insists the club were right to let Zakuani leave the club six months ago, but he admitted they missed his skills in the last month of the season.
Ferguson said: “When Gaby left, it was right for both parties at that particular moment. He went away and got experience of playing in a different country and he did very well.
“I just felt that in the last month of the season we really could have done with him. He has enjoyed good success in this league and knows the club inside out. I have thought about the potential partnership with Jack Baldwin and that was a part of my thinking.
“He knows there are certain areas he can improve, but Gaby is a rare breed who just wants to defend.”
