HIbs manager Neil Lennon has confirmed Peterborough United made a significan bid for highly-rated striker Jason Cummings.
The 21 year-old scored twice yesterday (August 6) as Hibs opened their Scottish Championship campaign with a 2-1 win at Falkirk.
Lennon did not confirm reports of the bid being in excess of £1 million, but admitted he’d had a converastion with Posh director of football Barry Fry.
Lennon said: “I spoke to Barry Fry on Wednesday or Thursday and to be fair, it was a fair offer for a good player. They were not coming in with £200,000 or anything like that, but we do not need to sell at the end of the day.
“I know from my own experience that everyone has a price, but there are not many clubs who could meet our valuation of what we think of Jason.
“We worked hard in the summer to keep him here, he has signed a new contract and has worked really hard pre-season not just on his football but his fitness levels which you could see against Falkirk. I thought he was fantastic, a real threat, a real thorn in their side. He could have had a hat-trick, but it was a brilliant performance.
“Jason is going to attract more attention but we have made it clear we are not selling. If someone comes in with a ridiculous offer then the club have something to think about but he is happy here.
“I spoke to him at length for three or four days (Lennon had him fly to Paris to meet him while he was working at the Euros this summer for the BBC) when he was in a mindset to go, but we persuaded him to stay which was great. It was a great bit of business by the club to get him on a long-term contract [four years] and he is happy here and long may that continue.
“Peterborough buy players, develop them and then sell them for fortunes - but we can do that ourselves. We still think there’s lots of scope for Jason to improve and I’d be loath to let him go just now.
“He’s a good kid with a strong mentality, he just keeps going never gets disappointed. If you have a pop at him he’s not one of those who hides, he will go again, nothing seems to affect him. He’s that bit of a rascal about him as we all know, but he is a great kid.”
