MATCH REACTION: Marcus is motivated by criticism

Marcus Maddison will continue use his many Peterborough United critics as extra motivation.

Maddison knows his brilliant goal and classy assist for a Martin Samuelsen header in today’s (April 1) 2-0 League One win over Charlton at the ABAX Stadium won’t shut his knockers up completely, but he is confident they won’t ever put him off his game either.

Maddison now has 15 assists and eight goals in another productive League One campaign. No-one has more assists in League One than the 23 year-old.

Posh improved late on in this game after abandoning their midfield diamond to play 4-4-2 with Maddison and Samuelsen supplying the width.

“The criticism I get is hard to brush off sometimes,” Maddison admitted. “But every time I step onto the pitch I am trying my best to help Peterborough United win a game of football.

“I get criticism home and away, but I use it as extra motivation. I just go out there and do my job. I try too hard sometimes. I admit I’m a bit short of where I should be goal-scoring wise, but assist-wise I’m still up there and I’m just as happy helping my team-mates to score.

“I was pleased with the goal and the assist today. For my goal I did a couple of stepovers and I was fortunate the goalkeeper didn’t expect me to shoot and he was slightly out of position.

“I just tried to dink it into the far corner and it came off. I’ve scored some good goals for Peterborough, but my favourite remains the one I scored at home against Port Vale (September, 2014) in my first season here. That was a lob to the far post as well and it’s the one that sticks in my mind as my favourite.

“For the assist, Junior did well to hold the ball up and I saw Martin unmarked at the far post and managed to pick him out.

“I think I play better on the right wing, but to be honest I’m happy to play anywhere for this club.

“The win was important for us. We know we are a good side and we want to prove it by finishing as high as possible.

“We’ve won two in a row and we will move onto the next one.”

Posh remained 11th in League One after a second win in a row. They travel to bottom club Coventry next Saturday (April 8).
