A much-improved pre-season display by Peterborough United was over-shadowed by news of a second member of the squad breaking his leg.

New signing Brad Inman suffered a freak accident in the final seconds of yesterday’s (July 22) training session. He was operated on in hospital where he remained today amd is not expected to return to action until November.

Striker Lee Angol fractured a tibia in the opening friendly of the summer at Boston United on July 9. He could return in October.

It’s a blow to a Posh side who nevertheless responded with a 2-1 win over Championship side Leeds United at the ABAX Stadium today (July 23). Shaquile Coulthirst scored two cracking goals from distance in the second-half to overturn an early Alex Mowatt goal for the visitors.

McCann said: “Brad just turned with no-one near him and planted his foot. He’s had an operation today. It was about six seconds from the end of the session. It’s devastating for the player and some of the lads have been to see him in hospital to try and cheer him up.

“We played very well in the second-half against Leeds. Pre-season is all about fitness, but it’s always good to win.

“It was a chalk and cheese performance. In the first-half we sat too deep and they found it easy to pick us of. We showed Leeds too much respect. We couldn’t find a pass and ended up going backwards too often

“I told the lads to play on the front foot in the second-half. I told them to believe in themselves as they are good players and I was delighted with the reaction.

“It was a superb second-half. We got at them and played very positively. Shaq scored two great goals, we defended very well and Chris Forrester got hold of midfield as a good captain should.

“Most of the players got 90 minutes and many of them will get 90 minutes in one of two games we have on Tuesday (July 26).”

Posh send a team to Championship side Brentford on Tuesday, and another team to tackle National League side Lincoln City at Sincil Bank.

Winger Jon Taylor and central defender Ricardo Santos missed today’s game, but could return on Tuesday. Trialist striker Morgan Ferrier has left Posh after McCann decided he wasn’t for him.

Left-back Callum Elder has still to make his mind up on a return to Posh on loan from Leicester. It was thought he might appear in the match against Leeds, but instead played for Leicester in Nuneaton.

McCann added: “We can’t wait forever for Callum Elder. We’ve got other options so we’ll wait another three or four days and take it from there.”
