SWANNY'S WORLD OF SPORT: The wrong people keep losing in the sack race

Paul Clement has been fired hastily by Derby County.

That’s not much of a statistic, until you remember he was only appointed Posh boss on September 21, 2015.

Westley’s not yet 150 days into his post, but already 36 other clubs have changed, or are in the process of changing, their manager/head coach/scapegoat/whipping boy.

Some, like Westley’s predecessor, deserved the boot. Others are the victims of impatient owners and unaccountable chief executives.

Derby County head coach Paul Clement is the latest victim of boardroom idiocy. His ‘crime’ sheet included steering the club to fifth place in the Championship, losing just five of 30 League matches and standing five points off an automatic promotion place.

But most importantly his side weren’t playing the ‘Derby way’ whatever that is. Losing more regularly presumably, but doing so in style.

The Derby statement which accompanied Clement’s departure was a gem though, unless you are one of the unfortunate ones to have forked out several hundred quid on a season ticket at Pride Park.

I say ‘unfortunate’ because now it appears promotion to the Premier League ‘is not the priority target’ for Derby County.

The Derby heirarchy want a return to the ‘style of football they enjoyed in the previous two seasons’. Excuse me? Derby imploded spectacularly last season under the stewardship of Steve McClaren after looking promotion certainties. Why would anyone want a repeat of that?

Any Derby fans reading the statement would surely be entitled to a refund or at least an apology.

The club broke their own transfer record twice in the summer. Why on earth would they do that if promotion is not a priority? Why on earth would they splash out £6 million on Bradley Johnson if attractive football was the aim?

The dreams of Derby fans have been shattered by that statement. Dreams of success are sometimes all that fans have to look forward to.

Posh have an unlikely target of reaching the Premier League as soon as possible so surely a club of Derby’s size should share that ambition?

No I’m sorry Clement’s axing is another example of football lunacy and the ludicrous sense of entitlement of millionaires with more money than football sense.

Why is it always the team leaders who carries the can anyway? How come directors of football, recruitment heads, chief executives and number crunchers employing bonkers moneyball theories always survive to repeat their mistakes?

And Derby have compounded their error by promoting a youth team coach to run the first team until the end of the season.

Rookie managers don’t always work out. Ask Gary Neville.

Over-promoted youth team coaches don’t often work out either. Ask Dave Robertson.

Anyone would think Derby don’t want to go up.
