Spotlight on Tranmere Rovers - 03/09/10
Don’t miss all the match reaction, reports and pictures from Posh’s League 1 trip to Tranmere on Saturday, in the Evening Telegraph on Monday.
STAR MAN
ENOCH Showumni is a handful for radio commentators as well as League One defenders.
The lanky striker has an awkward style of play. He can be clumsy, erratic, but also very dangerous as his three goals already this season would suggest.
Showumni is a Nigerian who started out at Luton, but has also represented Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds and Falkirk.
OTHERS TO WATCH
TRANMERE were busy on the transfer front this week as manager Les Parry brought in three new players.
Defender Jermaine Grandison has arrived at Prenton Park on loan from Coventry, midfielder Arnaud Mendy has been borrowed from Derby, but striker Sam Morrow is a permanent capture from Northern Ireland club Coleraine.
It’s unclear whether any of them will start tomorrow, but Mendy must have a chance as midfielders Joss Labadie and John Welsh, the club captain, are recent additions to the injury list.
Parry has preferred teenage keeper Joe Collister to their loaned number one, Gunnar Nielsen of Manchester City, in recent games.
Collister will be grateful for the reassuring presence of long-serving centre-back Ian Goodison. The Jamaican international is in his eighth successive season in Birkenhead and is approaching his 300th appearance for the club.
Midfielder Kayleden Brown is on a season-long loan from West Brom, while central defender Maximo Blanchard signed a one-year deal at Tranmere after impressing in pre-season. Blanchard spent last season in French football with Moulins.
Left-back Aaron Cresswell was out of favour when John Barnes was manager last season, but Parry is a big fan. Cresswell scored a brilliant free-kick equaliser at Dagenham & Redbridge last week.
LINK MAN
MARTIN Pike is one of the best left-backs in Posh history. He shone during the dark days of John Wile’s management at London Road.
Pike made 149 appearances for Posh between 1983 and 1986 after following Wile from West Brom. He even played in goal in the final minutes of a famous FA Cup win over Leeds United at London Road in 1986.
Pike was eventually sold to Sheffield United for £20,000 and in 1989 he made two appearances on loan at Tranmere.
Pike also played for Bolton and Fulham before moving into non-league football with Blyth Spartans and Bedlington Terriers.
He was last heard of operating as a scout for Fulham.
THE GOSSIP COLUMN
THE long-running saga over Rotherham United’s attempts to prise Ian Thomas-Moore away from Prenton Park cost the 33 year-old the team captaincy last month.
Thomas-Moore was rumoured to be joining his father Ronnie Moore at Rotherham, but no deal was struck before the transfer window closed on Tuesday.
Tranmere manager Les Parry said: “When the transfer deadline passed, the issue of Ian Thomas-Moore leaving us was dead. Today we can look forward to having Ian for the rest of the season. Ian, being the type of person he is, he will just get on with it.”
Thomas-Moore has been injured and is unlikely to play tomorrow.
SWANNY’S CRYSTAL BALL
Huddersfield 3, Bournemouth 1
Huddersfield have so many attacking options they could challenge Posh to be top scorers in League One over the course of the season.
Tranmere 0, Posh 2
It will be 4-0 if Grant McCann plays.

IAN Bennett delivered a masterclass of goalkeeping as Posh escaped from Prenton Park with a barely deserved point.
Tranmere monopolised possession in the opening half-an-hour and wingers Pat Nevin and Johnny Morrissey created chance after chance for their team-mates.
But even goal machine John Aldridge couldn’t find a way past Bennett who made five stunning saves before Posh opened the scoring from their first attack.
Midfielder Marcus Ebdon was the scorer in the 32nd minute following up successfully after Mick Halsall’s shot had been blocked by a defender.
Tranmere’s response was to rattle the woodwork twice, but although Chris Malkin equalised in the opening minute of the second half, the home side failed to kick on and Bennett’s fine last-minute save from Nevin secured a fine point.
Steve Cooper was a substitute for Tranmere that night just five months after his goal helped Posh to Wembley for the first time.
Posh: Bennett, Bradshaw, Robinson, Halsall, Howarth, Welsh, Sterling, Cooper, Adcock, Philliskirk, Ebdon. Subs used: Iorfa, Luke.
PAST TRANMERE v POSH
(League only)

POSH have a dreadful record at Prenton Park. They lost 7-0 in 1985 when current Posh physio Peter Corder was in goal.
Posh drew 1-1 at Tranmere on their last visit two seasons ago when Craig Mackail-Smith equalised an early goal from Charlie Barnett.
