Preview: Posh dare to keep dreaming of Championship survival
POSH will dare to dream of a miracle escape from Championship relegation if they can achieve a third straight win at the expense of Doncaster at London Road tonight (7.45pm).
Successive 1-0 victories against Sheffield United and Watford have lifted the gloom around the club in the last week, but Posh remain eight points from safety with just 10 matches remaining.
Liam Dickinson, the on-loan striker whose winner at Vicarage Road on Saturday is a contender for Posh goal of the season, admits survival is a tall order.
But if Posh can see off their slick-passing, play-off chasing opponents tonight, it would pile the pressure on their relegation rivals as well as give a further boost to their own improving confidence.
Dickinson said: “I look at the League table and I know that one or two more wins will make things more interesting.
“Eight points can be wiped out in a couple of weeks with the number of games we have coming up, but we can’t afford to look past the next match for now.
“It’s great to finally have an away win under our belts and back-to-back wins is excellent, but I haven’t noticed much change in the dressing room.
“The spirits were pretty high anyway, but we know we still face a tall order. We will just go out on the pitch, work as hard as we can and see where it takes us.
“Doncaster are a very good footballing side and will pass the ball around for fun, so we know it is going to be a very tough game.
“I think many people will see it is a winnable game and to be honest it is because we are at home, but we can’t get complacent about anything just because we have won two games on the bounce.
“If we can win tonight though it would certainly make things far more interesting at the bottom.”
Tonight sees the first of four Championship fixtures for Posh in 12 days. They have a tough trip to promotion-chasing Nottingham Forest on Saturday before travelling to relegation rivals Scunthorpe next Tuesday and welcoming Bristol City to London Road on March 27.
Midfielder Lee Frecklington could return tonight after missing the Watford win because of injury, but winger Chris Whelpdale, centre-back Ryan Bennett and right-back Kerrea Gilbert will be absent.
POSH boss Jim Gannon and chairman Darragh MacAnthony held lengthy talks at London Road yesterday. Neither man was available for comment last night, but it’s understood a possible extension to the manager’s contract beyond the end of the current campaign was top of the agenda.

Cant keep him for sentimental reasons especially with the negative effect he has on the club and its supporters. This is business, this is football. FRY OUT. FRY OUT. Bring on Doncaster.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 11:18 AMGANNON IN, FRY OUT!!! That should be the new chant. Jim Gannon has worked wonders with a depleted squad, wantaway strikers and having to sell our best player. If Jim Gannon goes and Barry Fry stays I for one will not be renewing my season ticket. Regardless of what division we are in. Roll on tonight!
