Posh v West Ham postponed despite fans efforts

Waiting for Video...

10.25am: Peterborough United's sell-out clash with West Ham at London Road was postponed before 9am this morning due to a frozen pitch, despite valiant efforts by fans from both teams.

Temperatures in central Peterborough dipped to -15°C overnight, and by 8am was still only -10°C so local Football League referee Kevin Wright called the match off.

All this despite the efforts of around 200 Posh and West Ham fans who turned up at 7am to help clear snow from the covered pitch.

Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony commented on Twitter: "When you see Posh fans turn up like they did this morning and West Ham fans call in to offer help, gives you great feeling owning a club".

Chief Executive Bob Symns said: "We would just like to thank our supporters for the magnificent effort in firstly attending in sub zero temperatures and then clearing the football pitch of snow within a couple of hours.

"We would also like to thank our friends from West Ham who also attended to help with the clearance and the banter between both set's of fans also kept everybody going. This is the side of football that people need to know exists - two set's of fans working together for a common goal.

"However, we were all beaten by the -15 degrees, which managed to get in at the surface below the snow and frost covers.

"We called in local Football League referee Kevin Wright, who in conjunction with the match referee, made the only decision, which was to call the game off." Symns said.

An alternative date for the fixture will be announced.

DARREN Ferguson has revealed that he tried to sign Macclesfield defender Shaun Brisley three seasons ago.

Brisley is expected to move to Posh on loan from the League Two club tomorrow before making the move permanent in the summer.

Ferguson said: “We had Shaun here three years ago because we were aware of his potential then, but he was homesick and didn’t fancy coming.

“We want him here as soon a possible, but I expect him to have an influence on the squad next season.”

I understood the "it were all fields" bit and did not take you literally. I well remember Greig Shepherd and John Turner breaking his leg. For those who are interested Errington Kelly is now an ESOL teacher here in Coventry. (English as a second language) We also have Mickey Gynn working as a postman.

Ah, Brighton, righto. Well done everyone for missing the point of the 'eee it were all fields' bit though.

@32 - Yes, you're absolutely right, and their new stand is going to hold more than twice the amount that ours will. However, they had something that PCC never seem to have. A plan.

IPUN..It was in the 80's, yes Leeds game was in snow but it was a header over the keeper.. As far as I remember only difference was Glebe Rd was open terrace, I don't think there have been open fields for as long as anyone alive can remember...#33 Game was a score draw on the panel, would have settled for a point but think we can take all 3....UTP

Roger, I couldn't work that out. True, it was Kelly that scored the equaliser against Brighton & the repley took about 2 weeks to get on due to the bad weather. But I'm sure the Leeds game took place in snow. The Leeds game was when John Turner broke his leg. What threw me was the poster stating that all were fields around here & it was the days before telly. Certainly wasn't the case & bovril & pie was more than 4p. I can't ever recall us playing Leeds United before 1974 though, when we got beat 4-1. My first ever game.

#31 I think you'll find that was the next round against Brighton, when Errington Kelly's shot bounced over the keeper, after hitting a mound of snow. Leeds game, from what I remember, was a looping header from Greg Shepard, then the no goal keeper on the subs bench scenario. Please if I am wrong let me know the memory ain't what it used to be...Bit like nostalgia....UTP

Just changing the subject, just watched Wolves on telly. They knocked their old stand down behind the goal after the last match of last season. The new stand is built, with all the seats and fans in the lower tier already. Only the seats to go into the upper tier. Now thats how you build stands. I would suggest that our council and club go and have a word and ask how to do it properly . What is the current update on the Moys Terrace . Anyone know ? Up the Posh . Keep the Faith .

I remember going to see Posh play Leeds in the FA Cup (well more cos I cant stand Leeds) and the Posh goal bounced off a pile of snow and in. All this was fields, and you could get a pie and bovril for 4p, we had no telly in them days, and the kids could play out, etc
